Machin definitive stamps go self-adhesive - 8 March 2011 - no PO FDCs

Royal Mail are rationalising production of definitive stamps so that eventually all will be self-adhesive, printed in smaller sheets suitable for use at Post Office counters.

The self-adhesive 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p values will be printed in sheets of 25 and will incorporate the security slits but not the irridescent overprint.  These will replace the current PVA gummed Machin Definitive sheet stamps of 200 for operational purposes as supplies are needed.  Please let us know when you find any of these in ordinary post offices.

As indicated by the adjacent illustration, the 2p, 5p & 20p stamps will be printed on one cylinder, while the 1p & 10p stamps will each have an individual cylinder of 12 sheets.

The cylinder number will be on the left adjacent to row 3, and the printing date and sheet number will be at the right adjacent to rows 3 & 4.

To see an image of a whole 1p sheet, and parts of the 2p, 5p & 20p sheets, see our blog.

All the new Machin definitive stamps will be printed by De La Rue in gravure, in sheets of 25.  We expect There will not be double-sheets of 50, so no gutter pairs.

Note: Royal Mail do not regard this as a new issue, no first day of issue facilities will be available, and no FDCs will be provided on Royal Mail standing order.  However, the following postmarks will be available (similarly all other permanent postmarks).  We will produce a limited number of FDCs to order.

Special postmarks available on the day of issue will be shown here.
