Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games - 17 July 2014

Six days before the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games, Royal Mail is issuing six new stamps to celebrate the largest sporting and cultural festival that Glasgow and Scotland has ever hosted. It will also be the third biggest multi-sport competition in the world and the biggest ever multi-sport event staged in Scotland.

The six stamps created by the Dutch illustrator. Nanette Hoogslag using dynamic imagery from award-winning sports photographer Andy Hooper, celebrate the skill and energy of six of the sports to be competed in Glasgow including para-athlete cycling. It will be the third time Scotland has hosted the Games after 1970 and 1986. The four home nations of the UK send separate teams and a total of 71 national teams will compete. The Opening Ceremony will take place on 23rd July at Celtic Park (the home football stadium of the Scottish Premier League Champions, Glasgow Celtic), with the Closing Ceremony being held on 3rd August at Hampden Park.

The six stamps will celebrate the skill and energy of six of the sports to be competed in the Games. Each stamp shows a different sport in action, from a judo throw to a squash rally, to runners battling it out in a marathon. The people demonstrating the sports are all professional sportsmen and women though their faces were changed to keep the emphasis on the action rather than the protagonist.   The stamps also carry the official logo of the Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games together with the XX logo, which has been cleverly created from the iconic Scottish Saltire.

Because they want to get maximum publicity from non-philatelic media Royal Mail are not permitting us to show or describe the other 5 stamps until the date of issue.   Unfortunately because we are away that week, our readers will not be able to see them until the following week - unless they look in Royal Mail's own Philatelic Bulletin.  By the time we are able to provide the details they should already be in Britain's three stamp magazines and those in other parts of the world.
All the details have been put on Royal Mail's own webshop so we are now able to show them here.
