When the Twin Towers of the old Wembley Stadium were demolished, it was the end of an era. Now the twin towers have been replaced by the Wembley Arch, visible from 13 miles away.
Royal Mail intends to commemorate the re-opening of Wembley Stadium with a miniature sheet. However, following recent announcements from Multiplex, the builders of the new stadium, and the Football Association, that the 2006 FA Cup Final will take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Royal Mail has postponed the issue of this sheet until the stadium is complete. Recent press reports suggest that the stadium may not be open for football until 2007. Click here to visit the official Wembley Stadium site.
Smilers Sheet As a result of the postponement, the World Cup Heroes Smilers Sheet which was to have been issued in conjunction with this issue (and featuring the 2002 Lion and Shield stamp) has been cancelled. A new World Cup Heroes Smilers Generic Sheet will be issued to accompany the World Cup Winners issue on 6th June 2006.
The Stamps
The sheet has been designed by Roundel, using 2 x 2nd class and 2 x 68p England Country definitives, and a redesign of the 'Crowned Lion & Shield' stamp originally issued for the 2002 World Cup.
Technical details:
The sheet is printed in gravure by De La rue. The sheet is 115(h) x 105mm(w).
